Welcome to the website for the EU Transport GHG: Routes to 2050 project

This website covers work undertaken as part of two projects funded by the European Commission: DG Climate Action, which aimed to, among other things, stimulate a debate about the actions that need to be taken in the medium- to long-term (particularly between 2020 and 2050) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector in the EU.

The first EU Transport GHG: Routes to 2050? project was completed in June 2010, however a 15-month follow-on project started in January 2011 (dubbed EU Transport GHG: Routes to 2050 II). This new project was commissioned to build on the work carried out in the previous project to develop an enhanced understanding of the wider potential impacts of transport GHG reduction policies, as well as their possible significance in a critical path to GHG reductions to 2050.

See About the Project for more details of the context and objectives for the work.

Stakeholder Engagement

As in the previous project, a major element of the new project is engagement with European stakeholders. In this context a series of meetings are again being organised. In the course of the project, two large events will take place, alongside a series of four smaller technical focus group meetings.

The first two focus group meetings were held in Brussels on 4th May 2011 and the first stakeholder conference was held in Brussels on 29th June 2011. The second two focus group meetings were held on Monday 28th November 2011. Further information on future events is available from the Forthcoming Events page.

NEW: The final stakeholder conference will be held in Brussels on 23rd February 2012 at the Diamant Conference Center. More information is available here.  Registrations to be received by 9 February 2012.

Presentations and papers relating to the various meetings of both projects, can be downloaded from the individual meeting pages via links on our main Events page.

All the meetings for the new project are planned to be held at the Diamant Conference Centre in Brussels, Belgium.  Directions to this venue are available from this link

EU Transport GHG: Routes to 2050 II First Stakeholder Conference

The First Stakeholder Conference took place on 29 June 2011. More information is provided on the conference here.

Reports and Papers

As part of the project, a number of reports and papers have been developed and presented to various meetings. Draft versions of the reports from the new project will be made available for download from the Reports page.

NEW 4 draft reports added 22 November 2011.

The final versions of the reports from the original project, together with the final project report, are also available for download from the relevant links here.

Illustrative Scenarios Tool

As part of the EU Transport GHG: Routes to 2050? project an illustrative scenario tool has been developed with the aim of scoping illustrative scenarios, and promoting discussion amongst stakeholders. The final version of the tool (referred to as the SULTAN Illustrative Scenario Tool) is freely available for download and use from the Illustrative Scenarios Tool page.

This tool will be updated in the course of the new EU Transport GHG: Routes to 2050 II project. More information will be provided on the Illustrative Scenarios Tool page once a new version is available.
